Approval Of Superman:Ride Of Steel At Six Flags New England

AGAWAM - The Zoning Board of Appeals on Monday voted unanimously to approve a special permit to allow improvements for the Superman Ride of Steel roller coaster at Six Flags New England.

The board voted 3-0 after hearing from consulting engineer John J. Furman, of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc., based in Springfield. Furman told the board the park's planned improvements are "meant to enhance the experience of the ride."

Furman answered questions about the effect the ride's improvements will have on the Connecticut River floodplain. The permit was needed because part of the ride is in the floodplain.

The improvements to the roller coaster will include the addition of fog banks, fire bursts and audio on the roller coaster, said Melissa Pinkerton, public relations manager for Six Flags.

No one spoke for or against the plan after the Board of Appeals held a public hearing attended by about a dozen people on Monday at the Agawam Public Library.

Golden Nugget Goes To Knoebel's

"Given the amount of speculation occurring online and the number of phone calls we’re receiving asking the question, it’s time to acknowledge that Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysberg, Pa. has purchased the Golden Nugget track and trains from Morey’s," said Joe Muscato of Knoebels. "There are no immediate plans to install the ride at Knoebels. This is, at best, a 2010 project. Neither a final location, or design/concept have been determined. The plan is not to exactly reproduce the ride as it was at was at Morey’s Pier.

Dick Knoebel, president of Knoebels Amusement Resort, said, “I’ve always liked the Golden Nugget and we’re excited about bringing it to Knoebels but we are not going to rush the project. We want to be sure that it is restored in a manner that both acknowledges the ride’s past and looks to its future at Knoebels.”

Epcot Adds Interactive 'Kim Possible' Attraction

Walt Disney World is scheduled to open its Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure on Jan. 28 at seven Epcot pavilions, allowing guests to become secret agents and partner with Team Possible members "to save the world from comical villains and their mad inventions."

The interactive attraction is based on Disney Channel's Emmy-winning animated "Kim Possible" series. It tells the story of an average high school cheerleader, Kim Possible, who tries to save the world from super villains and learns that fighting them actually is easier than coping with a teenager's peer pressures.

Guests can play the new adventure in Epcot's Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Japan, France and United Kingdom pavilions. Each pavilion will feature a different mission and villain from the TV series.

"We are constantly exploring new ways to provide immersive experiences to Epcot guests, and this new offering will add to our dynamic portfolio," said Jim MacPhee, Epcot vice president.

Guests use an interactive, hand-held "Kimmunicator," obtained from kiosks throughout the theme park, to maneuver through the mission. The device connects guests with a variety of "Kim Possible" characters who provide clues to stop villains from taking over the world.

In addition, the interactive devices allow guests to control "top-secret equipment" hidden inside the Epcot pavilions.

Actor Ricardo Montalban, who died last week, is the voice of the villainous Senor Senior Sr. During the game, Epcot guests must save the world from Montalban's character.

"Kim Possible" has led to numerous Walt Disney Co. spinoffs. Those include Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable characters at Disney Parks & Resorts, DVDs, books, video games and Disney Consumer Product's line of "Kim Possible" products available at retailers nationwide.

Tivoli Builds The Wildest And Fastest Interactive Ride In Northern Europe

A rendering of the new ride coming to Tivoli on May 1,2009.

Sit down and fasten your seat belt, for this summer you will be able to be the pilot of your own plane. Tivoli's new attraction in 2009 is the closest you can get to simulating a real aircraft without renting your own plane. It will be the wildest and fastest interactive ride in Northern Europe, and at speeds of 100 km/h and with 360 degree turns the flight will appeal to the full range of your emotions, making you both shudder and laugh.

The ride consists of two planes and its theme is the mystery of the Orient and the making of history. The planes are mounted on two large wings decorated with gold leaf and onion-shaped cupolas enveloped in a net of lights appearing as a cloud of dust by day and a luminous tornado by night. The design of the planes calls to mind early aviation history when boarding a plane was a unique experience. This will also be the case in Tivoli.

The ride will be placed in the Orient where the Blue Sapphire is located today, and it will be ready for take-off on 1 May 2009. With this new attraction, Tivoli will be able to offer its visitors 26 different rides in the 2009 summer season.

”Tivoli will never be completed, said Georg Carstensen, the founder of Tivoli, and this is still our belief today. And it may be even more important to remember this in difficult times, so we are looking forward to the 2009 season with its many new initiatives. One of them is our new ride that will be a truly unique experience – and so wild that it is only for the most courageous visitors,” says Lars Liebst, managing director of Tivoli.

The Ride

Booking. Visitors entering Tivoli can either pre-book a ride or get in line the same way as for other rides.

Go to gate. Visitors must go to gate 10 minutes before boarding at the latest. The boarding time is printed on the boarding card.

Boarding. Visitors must show their boarding card and are then allowed on the planes. There are two planes, each seating two pilots and two passengers.

Take-off. Once seated, the pilots and passengers are held in place by a safety bar. In front of the pilots a display shows the plane's control options. The planes are located at the end of two large wings that can rotate 360 degrees. The planes themselves can also rotate 360 degrees in all directions. The pilots are responsible for starting the plane and steering it during the ride using the flight controls. A special turbo (afterburn) button brings the speed up to 100 km/h and makes the wings rotate at 15 rotations per minute. The pilots decide if and when to use afterburn. Each pilot is in ”command” of the plane for approx. one minute during the ride.

Landing. After about two minutes of aerobatics the planes return to the ground. Tivoli's service staff thank you for visiting and get ready to welcome aboard the next flying enthusiasts who like to feel the adrenalin rushing through their veins.

Supplier and Safety

The ride is developed in cooperation with Technical Park, the Italian company famous all over the world for manufacturing unique and exciting amusement rides.

The ride will be TÜV-certified, thus ensuring visitors the highest possible standards of safety, as the certification means the ride complies with some of the world's strictest safety regulations in terms of manufacture and operation. In Denmark, the ride will be approved by the Force Institute.

NYC Reveals Coney Island Revival Plan

The city's plan to revive Coney Island goes public Tuesday, launching a seven-month approval process that should offer plenty of thrills and chills.

The 19-block rezoning plan aims to rehab Brooklyn's crumbling amusement hub with a kaleidoscope of rides, shops and residential towers.

A 27-story limit - the height of the landmarked Parachute Jump - has been placed on the tallest buildings, but most will be much lower, city officials said.

"This plan protects and preserves the unique character of Coney Island while bringing new housing, shops and recreational facilities to a community that needs more of each," Mayor Bloomberg said in a statement.

The plan's newly imagined "Wonder Wheel Way" will connect three iconic rides; the 88-year-old Ferris wheel, the Parachute Jump and the Cyclone, officials said.

"We're honored they decided to call it Wonder Wheel Way," said ride owner Dennis Vourderis. Visitors now walk to Surf Ave. or along the Boardwalk to move between the rides.

A review of the $2.5 billion rezoning plan starts with a 1 p.m. meeting at the Department of City Planning's Manhattan offices at 22 Reade St.

The plan includes a 27-acre indoor and outdoor amusement district hugging the Boardwalk from the Parachute Jump to the New York Aquarium. Included in the zone is a 12-acre park, which must be approved by the state Legislature.

Not everyone is in favor of the retail and residential growth.

"There is so much opportunity in Coney Island, but outside of the amusement district - that should be preserved for amusement," said Dianna Carlin, a local merchant who opposes adding residential and commercial entities.

Thor Equities, a development group that controls much of the area's land, declined comment, saying it had not yet closely reviewed the proposal.

The plan calls for 4,500 new apartments, including 900 units of affordable housing, 800 hotel rooms and blocks of glitzy stores along Surf Ave. Attractions may include virtual reality rides, IMAX theaters and a tattoo parlor. The public hearing process, officially the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure for Revitalization of Coney Island, calls for a series of hearings.

The plan goes to the local community board and the borough president next. Each has the power to recommend changes. It then goes back to the Planning Commission and finally the City Council. Both bodies must vote to approve for the plan to move forward.

Raptor Review

Here is a review of Raptor at Cedar Point in Sandusky,Ohio.

Raptor was built in 1994 by Bolliger and Mabillard of Monthey,Switzerland. The ride is an inverted steel roller coaster that has a green color scheme. It is a thrilling coaster with lots of fun elements.

Raptor was one of the first coasters that I ever rode at Cedar Point in Sandusky,Ohio. The line is usually never bad for this ride, due to the fact that it has a fairly high capacity. It is a smooth ride that, while it may have a little headbanging,is not completely painful.Cedar Point is one of my favorite parks and this is one of my favorite coasters. Therefore,I give this ride:

Bat Coaster Is The Star Attraction At Global Village

The new Bat Coaster is open until February 21 at Global Village in Dubailand.

Global Village, a member of Tatweer Dubai, has for the first time brought an exhilarating ride into the country mainly for the DSF visitors this year - The Bat Coaster, a one-of-a-kind roller coaster that creates a sensation of flying.

Known for being the prime tourism destination at the heart of Dubailand, the park provides extra-ordinary features that draw residents and visitors. Now, Global Village gives its patrons the opportunity to try the unique roller coaster, the Bat Coaster, said a DSF official.

Originally from the amusement park called Antibes Land in Antibes, a part of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur France, the Bat Coaster is sure to be another thrilling adventure for the guests at Global Village, he noted.

This steel-inverted roller coaster is also a feast for the eyes because it is approximately 1,148 feet long and almost 66 feet high.

The speed of the Bat Coaster will also take the breath away from riders as it travels at 38 miles per hour where one full ride lasts for a total of 1 minute and 5 seconds.

This huge foot course has 3 trains with 5 cars per train. Riders are arranged with 2 people across in a single row for a total of 10 riders per train. In an hour, the Bat Coaster can accommodate 900 riders.

This colossal roller coaster is now one of the main attractions at the fun fair rides that children, and parents adore. Among the 40 other rides and games in the park, the guests can enjoy the exciting feeling that the Bat Coaster offers.

"The Bat Coaster is ensured to be a safety entertainment facility but is not recommended to those with weak hearts. Busch Parks Sale Expected Soon

WILLIAMSBURG - The Financial Times of London reported Thursday that bidders are lining up for the anticipated sale of $7 billion in assets that brewing giant InBev wants to unload as part of its $52 billion takeover of Anheuser-Busch.

Chief among those assets is Busch Entertainment, which operates 10 theme parks including Busch Gardens Europe and Water Country USA. The sale is expected to reap up to $4 billion.

The Times listed likely bidders as Merlin Entertainment and Candover, both based in the United Kingdom. Strategic bidders may include Walt Disney and Universal Studios. Even Six Flags, which owns 20 theme parks and was long been rumored as a suitor for at least some of the 1,200 acres owned by the Williamsburg Pottery, is expected to ask for the sales memorandum.

Merlin owns Madame Tussauds and Legoland. Candover is a buyout group that owns Madrid-based Parques Reunidos, which operates 50 parks in a dozen countries. No longer mentioned is Dubai World, for which Busch Entertainment is building four parks.

Possible strategic bidders include media group Walt Disney, the world's biggest operator of theme parks, and Universal Studios, which is majority-owned by the US television and film business, NBC Universal.

Six Flags, which owns 20 theme parks in the US, Mexico and Canada, is also expected to ask for the sales memorandum.

The Financial Times quoted a person "familiar with the planned sale" as saying the initiative would test loan markets to see whether private equity groups could raise enough debt to launch bids for the company. A private equity bid would likely need to borrow about $2 billion to fund the deal.

If no bidder is willing to pay what Anheuser-Busch InBev wants for Busch Entertainment, the company could spin off Busch Entertainment through a "demerger."

IAAPA Decides Not To Hold IAAPA Connections 2009

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions has decided not to hold IAAPA Connections 2009 based on concerns regarding the economy and its impact on members’ ability to participate in the three-day education and networking event for attractions industry leaders. IAAPA Connections 2009 was originally scheduled to take place at Atlantis resort, Paradise Island, Bahamas, Feb. 24-26. The organization also decided not to hold its board and several other member committee meetings that were scheduled to take place at Atlantis in conjunction with Connections.

“While prospects for the year are uncertain, we know that our members are evaluating their businesses and adjusting their operations to address the current economic environment,” said IAAPA Chairman Darrell Metzger. “Like many of our members, IAAPA is evaluating programs and operations. As a result, we decided it’s in the best interest of our members and the association at-large to not hold IAAPA Connections 2009.”

“We were excited about this new event and are disappointed to make this decision, but we understand that circumstances change and we need to adjust our plans accordingly,” said IAAPA President and CEO, Charles Bray. “We will work with the IAAPA Board and our volunteer committees to determine how to proceed with a networking and learning event that brings attractions operators and suppliers together in the future.”

Thunderbolt Review

Hi,I decided to start doing reviews on the blog,so,here is my first review! Please comment and enjoy!

Thunderbolt(Kennywood),was originally known as the Pippin. The Pippin was built in 1924 and continued to operate until 1967,when it was transformed into Thunderbolt.

The ride is a classic wooden coaster with one variation:there's a steel coaster that goes through its structure!Phantom's Revenge, built in 2001,plunge into the ravine by going through the wooden supports of Thunderbolt. This wooden coaster may be odd,but it's still a decent coaster. However,it is my least favorite roller coaster at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin,Pennsylvania.

Some of the reasoning behind the title is that it has really sharp curves. Now,you can call me a wimp or whatever, but you still have to admit that this coaster is quite jerky.Although there isn't much headbanging, there is alot of slipping and sliding in those cars. The problem with that is if you ride with someone else, you squish them!

All in all,Thunderbolt is a decent roller coaster with some oddities and painful qualities.

Climate Partnership Between DONG And Tivoli

The world's first amusement park on wind energy

Tivoli will be the world's first amusement park to run on renewable energy. With this objective, Tivoli and DONG Energy are now entering into an ambitious climate partnership. The goal is to reduce Tivoli's energy consumption and to ensure that the energy consumed by Tivoli is covered by CO2-neutral production facilities.

Tivoli gets its own wind turbine

Tivoli's energy consumption is to be based on wind energy from 2010, and with the climate agreement, Tivoli occupies one of the three new wind turbines at the Avedøre Power Station, thus boosting the wind energy influx on the market. Tivoli's wind turbine will form part of a ground-breaking project at Avedøre Holme where three brand new wind turbines enable DONG Energy to test and demonstrate new technology. ”In future, we will see energy production from a high-efficiency multi-fuel power plant side by side with renewable energy in its best form. The Avedøre Power Plant and the three turbines, including one bearing the Tivoli brand will thus provide a significant Danish landmark for the Copenhagen Climate Summit next autumn,” says Lars Clausen, Executive Vice President, DONG Energy.

Why?

”As one of Denmark's strongest brands we have a responsibility for the world we live in. That is why we have been working with environmental initiatives for many years, and this is the climax of our efforts so far. We hope to be able to inspire others to follow the climate track, but also to help put Denmark on the world map through an innovative approach to the climate challenge. To have the world's first amusement park based on wind energy is something to be proud of after all,” says Lars Liebst, managing director of Tivoli.

In addition to specific energy reduction and wind energy measures, the climate partnership aims to raise awareness of climate initiatives in the rest of Denmark. As a result, a number of communication initiatives will be launched in the coming years in addition to a joint annual branding campaign that may inspire others to take similar action. The parties plan to start their collaboration soon after the turn of the year 08/09. One of the first tasks will be to find and implement energy savings in buildings and on lighting and rides.

Sarner Gives Alton Towers' Monorail A Creative Facelift

A view of the Moo-Norail,one of the new trains made over by Sarner for Alton Towers Theme Park in Great Britain.

Commissioned by The Alton Towers Resort to revamp its monorail trains, Sarner has transformed a mere method of transportation into an exciting escape to the UK's favourite Theme Park Resort.

The eight monorail trains used throughout the Resort to transport guests between the Theme Park's main entrance and two Hotels have always been seen as invaluable to visitors, as each train carries 100 passengers on an 8 minute closed loop circuit. Sarner's monorail makeover is a 360° redesign, with a different creative theme for each train, incorporating a complete visual wrap on the exterior with a co-ordinating coloured interior. This has been complemented with carefully themed audio playing throughout each ride.

Commenting on the project, Sarner's Art Director, Matthew Ringland, says, "Guests arriving at the Alton Towers Resort are full of excitement about the myriad rides and experiences awaiting them. However, the monorail had become a little tired over the years and it needed a facelift to make it more than just a mode of transport". Ringland continues, "The brief was to transform it into a fun and memorable attraction in itself as it not only welcomes guests into the park, it's also their last 'ride' at the end of an exciting day. The emphasis needed to be on bold, large scale motifs that could be viewed from a distance, but also had levels of detail that were fun to view close up, and it was important that the visual message didn't get lost when the trains were travelling throughout the Resort."

Sarner worked closely with the Creative Director for Merlin Themeparks and the Marketing department at the Alton Towers Resort to create themes that best represented their positioning as 'Britain's most Fantastical Experience'. Some of the themes for the trains were inspired by the Resort itself and others were inspired by nature. Whatever their inspiration, all of the trains are now eye catching, colourful and fun to ride and are a spectacular sight that can be seen throughout the Resort, blending in with the exciting attractions and rides that make up Britain's favourite Theme Park Resort.

1) Carribean –The design of the first train is based on the Alton Towers Resort Waterpark. This totally tropical Carribean paradise will warm you up, even on a cold day;

2) Pirates – Ahoy there me hearties! Skull & crossbones and oversized treasure chests make up the design of this train which is based on the new 'Mutiny Bay' area that opened at the Alton Towers Theme Park in 2008;

3) Explorer – The ficticous eccentric aristocrat 'Sir Algenon Alton' travelled the world in a flying machine to collect artefacts for his home, the Alton Towers Hotel, and it is believed that he transported them home on this train;

4) Moo-Norail – Gertrude the Cow, proudly sporting her 'best in show' rosette, is a real moover and groover. This was the first of the designs that utilised the shape of the train and created more impact from a distance ;

5) Celebration – Get the party started on this train for a fun day out. With bright streamers, balloons, disco balls and fireworks, this party train never stops celebrating;

6) The Daisy Train – Blooming marvellous! Nature at its best, this train blends in beautifully with the flora around the Alton Towers Resort and leaves guests buzzing with excitement;

7) Strawberry Fields – Strawberries and cream may be synonymous with Wimbledon but, after a trip to the Alton Towers Resort, you'll never forget your first ride in an enormous punnet of Summer fresh berries;

8) Jelly Bean – The most suitable train for those with a sweet tooth, each jelly bean on this rainbow coloured train was enhanced to ensure it looked good enough to eat.

Sarner's reputation has been built on it's ability to deliver creative and highly technical theme park and visitor attraction designs and installations but this project has been the company's first pure design commission and certainly won't be its last. Morwenna Angove, Sales and Marketing Director at the Alton Towers Resort said, "We initially looked at redesigning only a handful of the monorails but once we saw how amazing the first one looked we felt that it was a necessity to revamp the entire fleet. Sarner's creative talents have surpassed all of our expectations and we will hopefully be working with them again in the future."

The Alton Towers Resort Monorail Facts:

* The Monorail at Alton Towers was first opened by William Shatner in 1987

* Originally called 'The Silver Ride', each train was named after a planet in the Solar system

* There is a VIP car at the front and a car for disabled guests at the rear

* The trains are 40 metres long and travel at approximately 26km per hour along the 3.2 km track

* At the height of the season the trains transport 4800 people every hour

* Each train required 31 individual pieces of artwork for the redesign

* The new 'Explorer' train features artefacts which make reference to some of the myths and stories that surround the Alton Towers Resort

* The new designs have created great interest on the internet among theme park enthusiasts and amateur videos of the trains posted on You Tube get thousands of hits

Schlitterbahn May Reopen By Spring

GALVESTON — The island’s $30 million Schlitterbahn Waterpark, left with a big Hurricane Ike mess to clean up, is racing to reopen for the summer season and possibly by spring break, officials said.

“We’re feverishly cleaning up and will definitely be opening right around spring break,” said spokesman Jeffrey Siebert.

The return of the park, which already is selling passes for the island’s all-important summer season, is big economic news for Galveston.

Schlitterbahn, with its speed slides, winding rivers and uphill water coasters has lured nearly 2 million visitors since it opened in March 2006 on 26 acres at Scholes International Airport.

Hurricane Ike, which struck Sept. 13, didn’t do much harm to the park’s slides and amusement rides, Siebert said. The rides were tested and are structurally fine, Siebert said.

But storm surge left yellow inner tubes in trees and generally made a mess. Office buildings and warehouses that most visitors never see sustained most of the storm damage, Siebert said. The admissions booths and retail shops also took a hit from the surge, he said.

The hurricane forced Schlitterbahn to sit out the winter season, when it usually is promoting Wasserfest, its 70,000-square-foot indoor waterpark.

The indoor park gained industry attention for its convertible roof, which was shredded by Category 2 hurricane winds.

Wasserfest typically begins in September. During the winter months, the indoor park is a balmy 84 degrees.

The island’s Schlitterbahn is the third waterpark for the Henry family, which opened the original waterpark in New Braunfels in 1979.

The growing empire has another park in South Padre Island.

This summer, Schlitterbahn, which is German for “slippery road,” also plans to open a $750 million entertainment complex in Kansas City, Kan.

The project will represent one of the world’s largest tubing parks, with miles of interconnected rivers and attractions.

Back home, Anrem Corp., an affiliate company of island-based American National Insurance Co., is a majority owner of the Galveston Schlitterbahn park.

Siebert declined to say what kind of financial pain the storm inflicted on the park. Schlitterbahn, however, did have insurance, Siebert said.

“We are coming back,” Siebert said. “We are coming back bigger and stronger; the park should look brand new when it reopens.”

HalloWeekends Information: Cedar Point

Hello, my name is MavCoaster14, and I will now be contributing to the Amusement Park Madness blog. I am very excited to be here, and Orion is a good friend of mine, so I look forward to sharing information with the rest of the viewers. So, enough about me, lets get to my post!

Well, I know that Halloween is long over, but I have some interesting information that some people may be familiar with, but most of it I couldn't find anywhere online, so this may help some people out. I have been going to Cedar Point's HalloWeekends for many years now, in fact I have probably been there every year it's been around, but I'm still young, and HalloWeekends began when I was around a year old, so most of it I can't remember. A few months ago, I found some interest in this topic, and noticed that there wasn't much information about it. So, I looked hard through old pamphlets and brochures until I had information on every HalloWeekends event, so I decided that I would then share it with the rest of the world, so other people didn't have to do what I went through. So, here is a list of all of the HalloWeekends attractions and their locations from every year. Enjoy!

Alcohol May Be Flowing Again At Six Flags Over Texas

ARLINGTON – The beer taps could be flowing soon at Six Flags Over Texas and its Hurricane Harbor water park after a yearlong licensing fight.

A state administrative law judge issued two nonbinding opinions Friday recommending that the parks be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages. Carolyn Beck, a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission spokeswoman, said the agency's administrator rarely rules against an administrative law judge.

"This is a service many of our guests have requested and one that we'll be able to offer this season," Sharon Parker, a Six Flags spokeswoman, said Friday.

She said she hopes that beer will be on sale when Six Flags opens Feb. 28.

The judge's two 19-page "proposals for decision," as they're called, will be forwarded to the TABC administrator for a formal ruling.

Approval by administrator Alan Steen will give Six Flags its licenses, and opponents won't be able to appeal. If the licenses are rejected by Steen, Six Flags could appeal in state district court.

Opponents of the permits – including Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck – argued that the combination of thrill rides and alcohol could lead to hazardous conditions in the parks. Others said the alcohol sales could make roads around the parks more hazardous and harm the family-friendly atmosphere.

"They've signed a death warrant for many adults and children in the metroplex," said Carl Fors of Fort Worth-based Texas Sober.

Fors, who testified at an October hearing about the licenses, said Texas leads the nation in alcohol-related fatalities, which should be a wake-up call. He said allowing alcohol sales at the parks will be a "clear and present danger" to Texans.

Fors urged Texas to look to states that require an impact study before issuing liquor licenses.

Ron Wright, a former Arlington City Council member, said he expected this result but was still disappointed. He predicted that Six Flags will get its licenses.

"That kind of license in a family-style park is inconsistent," he said. "It poses a certain amount of risk."

Administrative law Judge Tanya Cooper wrote in the opinions that the "protestants' concerns, although understandable, do not rise to the level of an unusual condition or situation that justifies" rejecting the permits.

Wright said the precedent set by other theme parks with alcohol licenses was probably too much to overcome.

Alcohol is available at Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld, both in San Antonio, as well as at three water parks there. Hurricane Harbor's predecessor, Wet 'n Wild, also sold beer for about a decade. And before it closed, Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston had a beer and wine license.

Six Flags officials announced in December 2007 that they intended to apply for the licenses, but vocal opposition slowed the process. Park officials said that although they requested a license to sell hard liquor, only beer would be available in the park.

Parker said the broader license would allow the park to serve other drinks at private functions.

Latest Coaster From Interactive Rides Inc.

The Edge CoasterA view of the latest thrilling coaster by Interactive Rides Inc.

Interactive Rides Inc., can put another notch on its bat.

The Logan, Utah company designed, engineered and constructed a new high-tech, world-class ride, the Edge Coaster, which now sits atop the Crown Regency Hotel & Towers, Cebu City, Philippines.

The Edge Coaster, which opened Dec. 10, 2008, is 430 feet above ground level, with a 389-foot track. The four vehicles carry two passengers each.

According to Jake Rippstein, sales, Interactive Rides Inc., one of the unique aspects about the attraction is that "the passengers can decide if they want to tilt the seat and look down at the ground. Or they can decide to keep the seat upright and look at the great view."

The vehicles are able to tilt up to 65 degrees while moving sideways down he track. The tilt is controlled by two levers which are mounted on top of the lap bars restraint. The two passengers have to move the lever up or down based on what they want to happen and the levers also have to be in agreement in order to make the vehicle rise and tilt them towards the ground.

Interactive Rides Inc. hasn’t finished at the Crown Regency yet. Set for opening in 2010 is another Interactive Ride, Insanity the Ride, which will be built above the Edge Coaster on a platform that was originally to be a helicopter pad.

Quassy Proposes New Wooden Coaster

A rendering of the new wooden coaster coming to Quassy Amusement Park in Middleburry,Connecticut.

Quassy Amusement Park, Middlebury, Conn., will be proposing the construction of a new wooden roller coaster at the February meeting of the Town of Middlebury Planning & Zoning Commission.

The proposed 1,200-foot-long coaster would stand 35-feet-tall and be constructed by The Gravity Group of Cincinnati.

This is the first step in the process to build the coaster with a construction start date to be determined should the town approve the project.

Quassy Amusement Park opens its 101st season Apr. 25. The family-owned, family-oriented park charges no general admission. All-day wristbands or individual ride tickets are available. For more information visit www.quassy.com.

Dollywood Trims Pay-Salaries and Raises

As companies make changes due to the economic downturn, Dollywood is no different.

The park will have a shorter operating schedule this year as well as make some staffing changes to help with company costs.

Pete Owens, Dollywood’s Public Relations Manager, stated that the executive leadership team is taking a voluntary five percent pay cut, while other full-time salaried employees will not receive a pay raise for 2009.

The company, he said, has “just been trying to do things that we know we have control over, to keep Dollywood on a very positive financial footing moving forward, so as the economy recovers we are poised to be very successful moving forward.”

Attendance for the park was off between seven and eight percent from 2007 to 2008, according to Owens, but 2008 was still the third-best attendance year ever for the park. He also said attendance during the week of Christmas and the week of New Year’s was much higher than Dollywood officials had anticipated. “We’re hoping that that is … a glimpse into the 2009 season and that that will continue,” he said.

4D Cinema Is New Attraction At Drayton Manor

A screen capture of the new 4D film coming Drayton Manor Theme Pak in Drayton Basset,England.

A SENSATIONAL 4D cinema experience will be the new attraction at a Midland theme park.

The revelation of the whopping £1 million investment on a new “effects theatre” for 2009 was made by bosses at Drayton Manor Park and Zoo, near Tamworth.

Using the latest technology and special effects lighting, the attraction will allow audiences to watch a movie in 3D while sitting in specially designed simulation chairs that will react to scenes in the film.

The 4D element will see chairs move up and down, vibrate, release sprays of water, bursts of air, bubbles and even various smells.

Work on creating the 152-seat theatre will start later in the New Year ahead of the park’s opening on March 21 and will be located in the Soundstage Theatre next to the park’s Central Plaza.

Edward Pawley, general manager for Drayton Manor Park operations, said: “The 4D theatre will be a great addition to the park. Drayton Manor has an amazing mix of rides and attractions for all ages, but the 4D cinema will provide a fantastic indoor attraction for the whole family.”

This new addition to the park will be supplied by Simworx, a simulation attraction and effects theatre specialist based in Kingswinford.

Terry Monkton, managing director of Simworx, added: “I am delighted that Drayton Manor Theme Park will open one of our 4D effects theatres. This will be an excellent attraction and I’m sure it will be popular with all age groups.”

The theatre will screen the award-winning feature film Curse of Skull Rock, a family adventure that tells the story of Captain Scabb’s quest to find lost treasure.

It won the Best Children’s Animated Film award at the prestigious Stuttgart Film Festival.

Last year the park, which won Large Visitor Attraction of the Year (West Midlands Region) 2008, opened Thomas Land which proved to be a “phenomenal” hit, attracting thousands of fans of the story-book train characters.

Space Mountain At Walt Disney World Is Closing For "Refreshment" On April 19

One of the more iconic attractions at Walt Disney World is getting a makeover.

Disney said Wednesday it will shut down Space Mountain this spring for what the company described as a months-long "refreshment" of the 34-year-old Magic Kingdom roller coaster.

The ride will close April 19, just after the Easter holiday. It is expected to reopen late in the year, Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said, though a specific reopening date has not been set.

The timetable means Space Mountain will be closed throughout the busy summer-travel season.

The construction work will include installing new track inside the enclosed coaster, which carries guests in the dark through a series of sudden drops and sharp turns. The layout of the track will remain the same, however.

Other upgrades will include a new enclosure for the ride's queuing area and a new ceiling inside its signature, white dome, Finger said.

Finger said the renovations are the first substantial work on the ride since September 1999. The project follows a series of other makeovers Disney has made in recent years to some of its oldest attractions, including the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean in the Magic Kingdom and Spaceship Earth in Epcot.

Disney fans have been swapping rumors for more than a year that the company was planning a sweeping overhaul of Space Mountain. In 2005, the Walt Disney Co. completed an extensive, two-year makeover of the Space Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.

But the changes to Orlando's version of the ride -- it's the original Space Mountain, having opened Jan. 15, 1975 -- are likely to be more modest.

"We're retaining many of the classic elements that made Space Mountain a right of passage at the Magic Kingdom that's been enjoyed by generations," Finger said.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Joyland Owners Sell Some Rides And Put Land Up For Sale

The owners of Joyland Park are selling some of the rides and say more vandalism at the park this weekend, coupled with a soft real estate market, makes it unlikely that the park will ever reopen.

The "Last Warning -- Do Not Stand Up - Sit Down" sign was taken Saturday night off the top of Joyland's nearly 80-foot-high wooden roller coaster.

This last act of vandalism is one more blow to the aging amusement park, a Wichita landmark since 1947. The park has been closed since 2006.

Stan and Margaret Nelson, the owners of the park for more than half a century, have put the land up for sale and have begun selling some of the rides.

"What's going to happen? We don't know," Margaret Nelson said.

They have sold the Paratrooper, the Round-up and the big truck ride.

For now, the icon of the park, the wooden roller coaster, remains on the site.

The roller coaster, one of the few of its kind left in the nation, was a product of the Philadelphia Toboggan Co. It is one of the last surviving original wooden coasters designed by Herbert Paul Schmeck.

The Nelsons say they are open to whatever buyer comes along. Since October, they've offered the land for at least $2 million -- but so far there have been no takers.

The park, at 2801 S. Hillside, has suffered in recent months from more than 20 break-ins and from vandalism.

Since Christmas, some children broke into the park site and used the park for paintball practices, Margaret Nelson said.

The couple are working to maintain the property until it sells, but in the meantime, she said, with the economy slumping, "nobody is doing anything and we are still waiting."

City Council member Jim Skelton said Monday that he was disappointed to hear the park was beginning to be disassembled.

"It's an unfortunate situation," Skelton said. "But the neighborhood considers it a blighted area. Gangs break in and cause vandalism. If any use could be found for the land, it would be an appropriate future."

The park's best days were before television, air-conditioning, video games and other distractions kept people at home.

Joyland offered Chuck Berry concerts, fried chicken dinners, a swimming pool and steam-powered engine shows.

Volunteers from McConnell Air Force Base came last fall to help clean up the property -- but it is still far from the amusement park that earned Joyland a national reputation.

"It was one of the classic American amusement parks. It was family-owned and operated," said Gary Slade, editor and publisher of Amusement Today, a national trade industry publication.

Joyland began shortly after the end of World War II with brothers Harold and Herb Ottaway and their father, Lester Ottaway.

Herb Ottaway had a miniature train that he could pack up and offer rides on at county fairs as far away as Colorado Springs. In 1947, he offered those rides in the Planeview area.

In 1949 and 1950, the Ottaways bought the 40-acre tract where Joyland Park sits today. From there, they began building it into a family attraction.

In the early 1970s, the Nelsons purchased Joyland from the Ottaways. They ran it until a few years ago, when two groups made unsuccessful attempts to operate and buy Joyland.

During the heyday of amusement parks, more than 400 thrived throughout the nation, Slade said. Today, only 75 to 100 survive.

"The cost of business has gone up," he said. "The reasons for their demise include the costs of liability insurance, changes of ownership, and competition with other things. Kids in general don't go to parks like they did when I grew up. Joyland has a long, rich history, and it's sad that Wichita does not have a park in operation today."

Anheuser-Busch InBev Stops Flow Of Free Beer At Parks

TAMPA - Nothing in life is free. Nope, not even Budweiser beer at Busch Gardens or other Busch Entertainment Corp. hospitality centers, including SeaWorld Orlando.

Busch Entertainment Corp. told employees this morning that free samples of Busch's premier product no longer will be provided to theme park patrons.

And Busch Gardens employees of legal drinking age no longer will get two free cases of beer a month.

Busch employees and theme park aficionados alike have expected change since InBev, Europe's largest brewer, bought St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch two months ago for $52 billion.

The new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, is expected to sell the theme park division's 10 parks and focus on making and selling beer, but the poor economy is hindering those plans.

The Belgian brewer has a reputation for thriftiness. Busch Entertainment enjoyed a corporate culture with a parent company willing to invest in first-class facilities and widespread attention to employee needs to assure customer satisfaction at day's end.

Busch officials declined to comment beyond its six sentence e-mail.

In recent changes, Anheuser-Busch InBev said it would trim 1,400 salaried U.S. beer jobs, but no cuts have been announced at the theme parks and the new hospitality policy will have no effect on employment.

Annual admission prices to Busch Gardens were raised $2 to $69.95 on Dec. 26, following a standard practice in recent years. However Florida residents can qualify for year-round admission with that single price

Visitors of legal age will be able to buy beer at hospitality centers that will be converted into new facilities beginning this month, Busch Entertainment says in an e-mail response to questions about the new policy

The timing and details of hospitality center conversions will vary from park to park, Busch officials said.

The Busch Gardens hospitality house will close briefly at the end of January and reopen with a new café-style menu.

The SeaWorld Orlando location will close Feb. 1 for a longer period to be converted into a restaurant.

Powerball Is Coming To Universal Studios Orlando

Universal Orlando will become the new host for the twice-weekly drawings of Powerball, the 30-state lottery game that Florida is about to join.

Beginning Wednesday, Powerball drawings will be broadcast from Universal's sound stage 19. The drawing will also mark the first to include Florida since Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced in July 2008 that it would join 29 other states in the game.

The decision to join the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) -- which offers the long-shot prospect of even bigger payouts -- is one of a series of steps Crist has taken to expand gambling in Florida, which have also included granting the Seminole Tribe the right to offer Las Vegas-style slots and blackjack at its casinos. Crist's predecessor, former Gov. Jeb Bush, chose not to include Florida in Powerball.

Crist and other Powerball boosters say joining will help generate more money for education.

“We are excited that Florida will host the POWERBALL drawings from our very own Universal Orlando Resort,” Crist said in a prepared statement. “The Florida Lottery’s participation in this exciting multi-state game is another important step in furthering Florida’s commitment to advancing the educational opportunities for all of Florida’s students.”

Universal Studios Florida Production Group will produce the drawings, which will be broadcast to nearly 100 television stations across the country. Drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:50 p.m.

"This is a great opportunity for Universal Orlando’s production group and for the entire Central Florida production community to showcase our ability to produce a national-level show,” Universal Studios Florida Production Group General Manager and Vice President Pamela Tuscany-Warren said in another statement. “We look forward to working with POWERBALL to elevate the show to an entirely new level.”

After failing to find a buyer, park representatives asked a Delaware bankruptcy court Friday for permission to liquidate, indicating once and for all that the park will not reopen.

The park asked the court to convert its bankruptcy to Chapter 7 from Chapter 11 status. Under Chapter 7, a trustee is appointed to sell off the property and assets to pay creditors.

"Because the bid and sale process has been unsuccessful thus far, there exists no reasonable prospect of success in the immediate future,'' the filing stated.

Wild Adventures Announces Updated Water Park And New Ride For The New Year

Valdosta, GA- It may be wintertime now, but the magic-makers at Wild Adventures Theme Park are busy thinking of summer fun!

This became evident when park officials today announced that, greeting visitors for the 2009 season, will be a sparkling and updated Splash Island Water Park, and it will be the biggest capital investment in recent park history.

“Welcome to paradise,” said park General Manager Bob Montgomery. “We are totally renovating and improving what has been one of the finest and most popular waterparks in the entire region, with new theming, new facilities, additional seating and shade structures and a new water ride adventure guests won’t believe.”

When guests enter Splash Island they will step into a Polynesian paradise with an all-new water ride, revamped restaurant called Surfside Cafe, expanded locker facilities and more shaded areas. Splash Island is a totally re-themed water park with additions and improvements to enhance guests’ tropical experience. “We wanted to bring a little of the Polynesian tropical feel and adventure to the area,” said Montgomery.

The new water ride is called the Wahee Cyclone, and it is the only such water ride in the southern Georgia-northern Florida area. Wahee Cyclone is essentially a giant funnel, standing forty-eight feet tall and forty-five feet wide. Four riders in a cloverleaf-like raft plummet through an enclosed tube in complete darkness then free-fall into a huge funnel that rockets riders up one side and down the other until the riders are deposited through the end of the funnel.

Splash Island offers guest twelve-acres of wet fun with more than ten water activities, including six water slides, tropical lagoons, a 1,000-foot lazy river, a special area just for kids, and a 20,000 square-foot wave pool.

Projected opening date for Splash Island is Saturday, March 28, 2009. Passport holders will be able to catch a sneak peek of the new Wahee Cyclone and re-themed water park March 21. As in the past, Splash Island is FREE with park admission. Wild Adventures Theme Park opens Saturday, March 14, 2009.

Season Passports for Wild Adventure are now on sale for just $79, and include unlimited park admission for the 2009 season. Guests can purchase a Gold Passport for $99 and enjoy free parking, free miniature golf and free go-karts all season long.

Guest At Magic Kingdom Is First To Recieve Free Admission In 2009

Using an oversized park ticket created for the occasion, Seattle, Wash., resident Andrew DaCosta entered Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom this morning as the first person in the nation to receive free admission to a Disney theme park on a birthday, as part of Disney's "What Will You Celebrate?" campaign.

DaCosta, who turns 49 today, redeemed his "free on your birthday" registration at a Magic Kingdom Guest Relations window at 7:31 a.m. Then he, his wife, Carolyn, and their daughters, Alana and Kathryn, then entered the Magic Kingdom when the park opened at 9 a.m.

In addition to offering free admission to everyone who visits a Disney World or Disneyland theme park on a birthday in 2009, the company's "What Will You Celebrate?" promotion features new theme-park entertainment, added celebration experiences and other attractions and activities geared toward celebrations. The campaign aims to encourage people to take "celebration vacations" for annual milestones, such as birthdays, honeymoons and anniversaries, at both U.S. vacation resorts.
